Like Dragon in Flight, this drawing is based on the games I played with my brother when we were younger. We loved to dream up magical worlds – I’d think of the princesses in castles, the flying horses and endless jewels, my brother came up with dragons and warriors and strategic battles to be fought.
I loved to create intricate maps with dangerous mountains, hiding places and adventures yet to happen. I’m very fond of the medieval perspective that is somewhere between birds’ eye and a map, like God is looking down upon the earth. In this image I like the idea of playing with a magical world, bowing over it like a game with figurines, or like the omniscient perspective of a very good book. The idea that you can look things over, see things coming, can get excited about what’s ahead of you.
That playful longing for what’s next, that’s what I liked to put in here.
